Abstract
Benign osteoblastoma, specified as such by Lichtenstein in 1956, bears much clinical and histological resemblance to osteoid osteoma. Diagnosis can often be made from the radiological appearances. Despite the appellation “benign”, several cases of malignant transformation have been described. Previously called osteogenic fibroma or ossifying fibroma (Lichtenstein 1952) or giant osteoid osteoma (Dahlin and Johnson 1954), benign osteoblastoma was characterised simultaneously by Lichtenstein (1956) and Jaffe (1956). Several small series have been published since, but it is not a very common lesion (1% of primary tumours of bone). Its preferential site is in the spine (40%). Jackson et al. (1977), in a review of the English language literature, found 184 cases of which 15 (8%) were in the hand. Lichtenstein and Sawyer (1964) published 4 cases in the hand, Mosher and Peckham (1978) 1 case and Chaise and Witvoet (1983) 1 case.
