Abstract
Chondromata are the most common of the benign cartilaginous tumours. They preferentially affect the hand (45%–65% of cases, according to series: Geschickter and Copeland 1949, 52/110; Dahlin 1973, 56%; Jaffe 1958, 18/28; Mirra 1980, 75/153) and aetiologically constitute the most frequently found of the skeletal tumours of the hand (Carroll 1975, 90% of cases). Several major series of bony chondromata of the hand have been published, as follows: Takigawa (1971b), 110 cases; Jewusiak et al. (1971), 41; Tomeno and Forest (1974), 29; Noble and Lamb (1974 a, b), 40 of 50 osteocartilaginous tumours of the hand; Alawneh et al. (1977), 33; They must be dinstinguished from solitary enchon- droma, multiple enchondromata, and multiple en- chondromatoses or Ollier’s disease.
