Abstract
Laskowski, in 1961, in a little-read Polish journal, gave the first description of “aponeurotic sarcomata”, defining the clinical, histological and sequential characteristics of this malignant tumour. Before this, Berger (1938) had been intrigued by a particular form of synovial sarcoma of the wrist, and De Santo et al. (1941) had described polygonal and polyhedral tumoral cells analogous to those of the epithelium. Bliss and Reed (1968) reported four cases of “large cell” sarcoma. Enzinger (1970) made the major and most detailed study in a series of 62 cases, establishing the term of epithelioid sarcoma. Since then, this malignant tumour, whose deceptive clinical and histological features simulate a benign lesion, has been amply identified and recognised, partly thanks to progress in electron microscopy. However, many problems remain, particularly as regards its mode of evolution and its histopathological origin.
