Abstract

This is by far the most common malignant tumour of the hand, mainly affecting the dorsum and nail bed. It is a malpighian epithelioma, also known as an epidermoid carcinoma, containing squamous cells. Normally, they arise on a solar keratosis, sometimes on a chronic lesion (an old burn scar or osteomyelitis sinus), in other cases in healthy skin.
