Zusammenfassung
Seit 1961, als Charnley über seine Erfolge mit einem totalen Hüftgelenkersatz, der Low-friction-Arthroplastik, berichtete, sind die frühen Ergebnisse der Operationen von Untersuchern in der ganzen Welt hinreichend dokumentiert worden. Zusammen mit den positiven Ergebnissen ist mit zunehmender Verlaufsbeobachtung auch über eine alarmierende Anzahl von Fehlschlägen berichtet worden. Dies hat dazu geführt, daß das Operationsverfahren zugunsten von Methoden mit kürzeren Verlaufsbeobachtungen aufgegeben wurde, z. B. Double-cup-Arthroplastik und die jetzt angewandte sog. zementlose Hüftgelenkendoprothese. In vielen Fällen stellte sich der Zement tatsächlich als Hauptversagensursache heraus.
