Abstract
Pharmacologists pose a number of questions for themselves regarding drugs. They are interested in the role of absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and localization of the compound. In order to answer these questions, it is necessary that methods be available, but these methods must also have the attributes of high sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility. An added attribute of an assay would be if the procedure had a simplicity that neither required extraction from biologic fluids nor column chromatography nor high pressure liquid chromatography instrumentation currently available. The radioimmunoassay techniques as developed by Berson and Yalow (1959) possess most of the attributes enumerated above. However, it needs to be emphasized that the specificity of the assay is not absolute.
