Cerebral Blood Flow and Energy Metabolism in Severe Subarachnoid Hemorrhage in the Cat: Effect of Calcium Antagonist Vasodilation

Abstract

We developed a modification of the Kety-Schmidt technique [4] using hydrogen and platinum electrodes in the superior sagittal sinus and the aorta of cats to measure global cerebral blood flow (CBF). CBF and knowledge of arteriovenous differences in oxygen and glucose from the brachial artery and the confluens sinuum allowed estimation of global metabolic rates for O2 and glucose (CMRO2 , CMRglu). The hydrogen signals in the aorta and the superior sagittal sinus are shown in Fig. 1. The validation of the hydrogen modification against the original N2O Kety-Schmidt technique in 12 cats is shown in Fig. 2.
