Hormonal Control of Cell Division in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Conjugation of haploid MATa and MATα cells of Saccharomyces cevevisiae occurs only under conditions that are also conducive to active vegetative growth. Thus, cells must decide whether to undergo mitosis or to conjugate with the cell of opposite mating type. The stage of the cell cycle has been defined at which this decision is made. In most vegative cultures of yeast the majority of the cells are budded and beyond the stage of initiation of DNA replication. A minority of cells are unbudded and most of these are prior to the stage of initiation of DNA synthesis. Zygotes are produced between two haploid cells that are both unbudded (1). Indeed, when vegetative cultures of MATa and MATα cells are mixed together, both cell types accumulate in the unbudded phase of the cell cycle (1).
