Abstract

The climax concept involves the possibility of reconstructing past climates by using former distribution patterns of plant and animal species, provided these distribution patterns were governed by climate only. With this prerequisite in mind, various attempts have been made to understand the development of Holocene climates better. ANDREWS and DIAZ (1981) tried to reconstruct Holocene July temperatures for Northern Canada by means of eigenvector analysis starting from the correlation between pollenfloras of surface samples and present-day climates. The same was done by ANDREWS and NICHOLS (1981) for Central Northern Canada. The authors noticed in the course of their work, that various comparable investigations done by other authors repeatedly diverge very strongly from each other. This holds true even for the analysis of the same pollen profiles within the Eastern Canadian Arctic, if different mathematical approaches are used (ANDREWS et al. 1980). BARTLEIN et al. (1984) investigated Holocene changes in July temperatures, precipitation, and prevailing air masses respectively, for the northern Midwest of North America, checking these reconstructions of past climates with former changes in fluvial activity and with oscillations in lake levels.
