Abstract

The generic classification of the major alliance of leptosporangiate ferns is very much in focus, and considerable progress is being made, especially in Polypodiaceae and in the Tectaria group of genera, the old (and sometimes not so old) classifications concentrating on soral characters being replaced by new ones based on features of scales, venation, dermal appendages, paraphyses, etc.
