The Lupus Subset Idea

  • Chapter
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract

The broad clinical spectrum of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has always been an enigma to clinicians: in contrast to the majority of autoimmune diseases, SLE does not have a single “target organ”; rather, a variety of organ systems may be involved. Nevertheless, individual patients tend to present with a limited number of clinical features and not the whole spectrum of possible ones. (The small sample of patients shown in Table 1 illustrates this point.) Moreover, in the course of flares, patients tend to present with the same symptoms manifested previously, and a small number of “new” features may or may not be present in addition.
