Abstract

A guiding principle in studies of brain-behavior relationships in general, and the mediation of memory in particular, has been that knowledge of the mediating anatomical structure often provides invaluable insight into how a function is performed. Recently, my colleagues and I have been using a double-labelled 2-deoxyglucose radioautographic technique to study the anatomical distribution of the metabolic correlates of memory activation in split-brain cats. Before presenting the results of these current studies, I will summarize the salient findings of our 35 years of prior research on this problem, so that our present metabolic studies can be integrated into the perspective of the preceding neurophysiological evidence.
