Abstract
To understand pollution in coastal regions it is necessary to analyze the behaviour of potential pollutants in uncontaminated sites as a baseline reference. In Brazil, coastal regions near industrial and metropolitan areas are suffering impacts from a variety of pollutants. In view of this, we started baseline studies on heavy metals in Ribeira Bay, a region which has no known sources of pollution but is near both, metropolitan Rio de Janeiro and a newly constructed nuclear power plant in Angra dos Reis.
