Abstract

The problem of the detailed form of the cloud of virtual particles dressing the sources of a field [1]has aroused a persistent interest in several branches of physics until very recently. From a qualitative point of view the origin of the cloud can be understood as follows. The source is subjected to quantum fluctuations because of the interaction with the field. In the course of a fluctuation, one or more “virtual” quanta of the field may appear, depending on the form of the source-field coupling.
