Wunsch und Forderung des Intensivmediziners nach fortlaufender Registrierung von Sauerstoffverbrauch und Kohlendioxidabgabe beim kritisch Kranken haben in den letzten Jahren Forschungsgruppen in aller Welt (teilweise mit kommerziellem Hintergrund) dazu bewogen, adäquate Systeme mit hoher Meßgenauigkeit und klinischer Praktikabilität zu entwickeln.
