Abstract
Volatile anaesthetics exert powerful effects on the cardiovascular system in every species studied. Each anaesthetic exerts a different spectrum of dose-dependent effects on the constituent organs and tissues of the heart and vascular system. These effects are complex, but can be classified as:
-
1.
Direct depressant effects on cardiac muscle and vascular smooth muscle;
-
2.
Direct depression of cardiac pacemaker or conduction tissue;
-
3.
Inhibition of baroreflex control mechanisms;
-
4.
Suppression or activation of sympathetic nervous activity.
