Abstract
Functionally, the laryngeal arteries and their branches are distinct from the arteries which supply the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Several arteries belonging to the external carotid system can give rise to the superior laryngeal artery. However, the specific territory of this system extends from the base of the tongue to the first tracheal rings. It therefore includes the upper cervical oesophagus, the muscles of the larynx, its cartilages, and the laryngeal nerves. On the other hand the supply to the parathyroid and thyroid tissue will involve cervico mediastinal territories. A brief review of embryological development of the branchial arches and floor of the pharyngeal intestine will help the following anatomical study (Table 6.1).
