Abstract

Direct examinations of the pancreas have been substituted for indirect ones — whose sensitivity was very poor. Some are invasive (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatomography, angiography). However, pancreatic exploration has benefited from the availability of imaging procedures (ultrasonography, CT). These have quite a high sensitivity and specificity, and therefore always come prior to the invasive procedures. In most cases, clinical examinations of cancer of the pancreas reveal an advanced tumor which is incurable. This cancer must be diagnosed from less suggestive symptoms; hence, more emphasis must be placed on morphological examinations.
