Abstract
The Baltic Shield extends over an area of 1,140,000 km2. It is the largest exposed part of the crystalline basement of the Eastern European platform. The northern margin of the shield, extending along the Barents Sea coast, includes fragments of the western branch of the Timan-Kanin Baikalides constituted of Riphean rocks. In the west and north-west, the shield is overthrusted by the Scandinavian Caledonides, and in the south and east the shield surface gently plunges under the sedimentary cover of the Russian Plate.
