Presurgical Evaluation of Epileptics

Abstract

The relevance of data derived from the huge number of experimental studies on epilepsy for its treatment in humans depends on how transferable these results are. One possible solution to this question is given by the experiments done on brain slices from human cortex resected for the purpose of epilepsy therapy. Concerning this aspect, the results published so far are inconclusive. Clearly, more studies are necessary because a better knowledge of the clinical relevance of experimental epilepsy models is essential to improve (1) development of new anticonvulsants, (2) understanding of clinical, electroence phalographic, and metabolic seizure manifestations, and (3) knowledge about the development of pathological alterations of brain tissue in relation to seizures and their consequences for treatment.
