Abstract

Before 1986, no complete census had been carried out of the breeding population of shags in the Balearic Islands. Fortunately, data of the Cabrera Archipelago (Araujo et al., 1977) were available, which meant that an analysis could be made of the evolution of the colony there during a period ranging from 10 to 12 years. As for the other islands, a correct estimate existed only for Menorca (Muntaner et al., 1984), while data were lacking for Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
