Contribution of the Genetical and Neural Memory to Animal Intelligence

Abstract

Mechanisms that adjust the internal “parameters” of organisms to random or temporary changes in the environment can be found at every level of living organization (Plotkin and Odling-Smee 1981). At the most basic level, these mechanisms are in gene expression and in the epigenesis of the phenotype. This basic level of organization may be thought of as “genetic memory;” much animal performance involves mechanisms at that level and is based mostly or entirely on gene expression.
