Abstract

Infrared spectroscopy is one of the most widely used analytical techniques for the identification and characterization of organic compounds. Several reasons may explain the power of this technique in analytical chemistry:

  • ease of operation of IR spectrometers

  • ease of sampling

  • ease in which a sample may be classified according to its chemical class from its spectrum.

  • Variety of states in which a sample can be analyzed.

  • Availability of libraries of compounds.

  • Accuracy to which quantitative analysis may be carried out.
