Evolution of the Amoco-Cadiz Hydrocarbons in the River Aber-Benoit

During the night of March 16 to 17, 1978, the super-tanker AMOCO-CADIZ was grounded off the coast of Nord-Finistère (Brittany, France) and its entire 223 000 t cargo of Arabian light (100 000 t) and Iranian light (123 000 t) crude oil was released into the environment. The very bad weather, the position of the ship wrecked on rocky shallows prevented any efficient human operation to stop the oil flow to the sea at 1.5 mile distance off the Portsall coast and the whole cargo was lost after 14 days.
