Sources of Organic Contaminants in the Marine Environment: Ocean Disposal and Accidental Spills

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIG,volume 9))

Abstract

Organic contaminants enter the world oceans through a variety of non-point-source transport pathways, including deposition from the atmosphere, direct runoff from coastal municipalities, and runoff from agricultural lands either directly or via rivers. Rivers also deliver to the oceans those organic waste materials discharged via industrial and municipal effluents into upland surface waters. These oceanic inputs are supplemented by deliberate point-source discharges from coastal outfalls and ocean dumping, and accidental releases of materials during oceanic transport or coastal production and transfer operations. The purposes of this paper are to summarize current information on the quantities and types of organic contaminants entering the oceans as a result of deliberate disposal and accidental spills, and to assess the potential magnitudes of these inputs relative to others.
