Abstract

Recent work is reviewed investigating the possibility to describe non-thermo-dynamical systems in terms of an entropy-like potential. First a general introduction is presented formulating, for the non-specialized reader, the main general auestions which have been investigated and the answers which have so far been obtained. In a second somewhat more technical section the essential points are presented for a particular dynamical system where a limit cycle appears via a discontinuous transition with hysteresis and bistability.
