Abstract
It is known that staining of eukaryotic metaphase chromosomes with basic dyes reveals an irregular and strictly specific binding of the stains along the chromosome. This is explained by the character of irregular DNA packing along the chromosome length, i. e., at defined sites of the chromosomes the amount of DNA per unit volume is greater or less than in the other sites. The highest DNA specific concentration is assumed to correspond to the sites of the constitutive heterochromatin.
