Abstract
This laboratory (University of Illinois) has been working for a number of years on the selection of plant cell strains which are resistant to various compounds. Such resistance should be useful as markers in genetic manipulation experiments. In these studies cell strains with alterations in amino acid biosynthetie enzymes have been recovered by selecting for resistance to several amino acid analogs and to the herbicide glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)-glycine]. Several of our most thoroughly studied resistant strains will now be discussed.
