Economic and Social Burden of Osteoporosis

Current Concepts of Bone Fragility

Abstract

With the aging of our population, health problems like osteoporosis are assuming greater importance. We can assess osteoporosis by means of suitable diagnostic instruments. Radiographs are considered inadequate for this purpose as they may not detect any abnormality until bone loss approaches 30% (Consensus Conference, 1984). Dual photon absorptiometry has been recently used by Melton (1985) to estimate the distribution of vertebral mineral density. To our knowledge, this technique has not yet been applied to any Canadian population.
