Abstract
The study of enzyme activities in trophoblastic cells is important for several reasons. From a biological point of view, it provides informations about the activation of specific metabolic pathways. For practical purposes, a knowledge of the normal range of enzyme levels makes possible the first trimester fetal diagnosis of metabolic diseases in pregnancies at risk (Kazy et al. 1982; Danesino 1983; Simoni et al. 1983). In this respect, the most consistent data obtained so far concern the activity of lysosomal enzymes. So far, prenatal diagnosis through the technique of chorionic villi sampling (CVS) has been realized in about 100 pregnancies at risk for lysosomal diseases (see Galjaard, this volume).
