Abstract
The neuromuscular blocking agent, dioxonium, was synthesized by dimerizing the structure of cholinomimetic compounds. This procedure is known to lead to the loss of muscarinomimetic properties and the appearance of a pronounced blocking activity with respect to cholinoreceptors of skeletal muscles (Bovet et al. 1951). Imbretil, containing two carbachol molecules connected by six methylene groups, also fails to exert cholinomimetic effects characteristic of carbachol, but shows a strong and protracted neuromuscular blocking effect (Klupp et al. 1953). This approach has proved to be useful in the case of acetylcholine derivatives containing a dioxolan moiety, e.g., F-2268 (compound 1), showing strong muscarinomimetic activity (Fourneau et al. 1944).
