Abstract
France, and to a lesser degree, Japan are the only industrial countries to keep to their schedules for a stepped-up nuclear program (1). By January 1, 1981, gross installed nuclear power was 15 GWe, of which 15.900 were MWe light water reactors. Another 27 PWR reactors, including ten 1.300 MWe reactors, were under construction. When completed, they will provide an additional 35.1 GWe. Since 1981, one out of three Kwh has been nuclear; by 1984, the proportion is expected to be one out of two. Starting in 1985, nuclear power will furnish 60% of electricity production, which at that point will no longer need to rely on oil. (See Fig. 1).
