Abstract
A variety of in vitro techniques are employed to assess the pathogenicity of inorganic dusts and the mechanisms of dust-induced lung injury. However, the relevance of these procedures to in vivo cellular changes remains to be determined. To provide a scientific basis for in vitro tests a knowledge is required of the cellular events leading to the fibrotic and neoplastic lesions often associated with dust inhalation. This problem has been addressed by looking at the early cellular changes in the lung parenchyma of rats exposed to crocidolite asbestos for varying periods. Attention has been paid to diffuse changes in the respiratory part of the lung.
