Part of the book series: Bayer-Symposium ((BAYER-SYMP,volume 9))

Abstract

Until recently, technical limitations have precluded the study of small resistance vessels in vitro, and analysis of drug effects have been restricted to arteries of 300 μ O.D. and greater. The wire method of vessel mounting (Bevan and Osher 1972) and the development of an appropriate myograph (Mulvany and Halpern 1977) have allowed physiological and pharmacological analyses to be carried out on vessels as small as 70 μ O.D. As had been anticipated from findings with other less direct techniques, small arteries differ, sometimes quite remarkably, from their larger parent vessels not only in features related to their gross anatomy, but in a variety of other structural and particularly functional themes. The evidence is quite overwhelming that comparatively little can be infered concerning resistance vessels from the study of elastic or even the larger muscular arteries.
