Obwohl in einigen Kreisen „umstritten“, ist DMSO z.Z. in 50 Ländern der Welt, einschließlich den USA, eine verschreibungspflichtige Substanz. Die biologische und klinische Bedeutung ist in über 5000 wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten, 5 internationalen Symposien und 7 Monographien behandelt worden. Ein internationales Symposium fand 1965 in Berlin, ein anderes 1966 in Wien statt.
