Abstract

Increasingly, indications are arising for the use of diagnostic ultrasound in the puerperium, mainly in relation to the uterus, the upper abdomen (gallstones), and the kidneys (hydronephrosis). In the uterus, typical features of involution can be recognized (Fig. 13.1), and retained placental tissue or blood clots can be demonstrated (Figs. 13.2, 13.3). Because the uterus normally remains enlarged for 4–8 weeks post partum, a full bladder is not always necessary for the examination. The ultrasound examination is relatively simple and brief and, in our opinion, is used far too seldom.
