Abstract

The interferon (IFN) system is composed by a series of antiviral and cell modulating proteins newly produced by body cells stimulated by foreign substances.

There are three known antigenic types of IFN and a number of subtypes (for a general review see [41]): Alpha-IFN is produced by leukocytes induced by viruses, xenogenic or tumor cells, bacteria, and B-cell mitogens through a mechanism of interactions at cell surface [17], and can prevent spreading of viruses through the bloodstream and enhance the effectiveness of natural barriers (blood-brain, blood-lung, etc.). Beta-IFN is produced by fibroblast and epithelial cells during virus infections, viral RNA being the inducing factor. It diffuses poorly from solid tissues, quickly establishing the antiviral state in the neighboring cells. Gamma-IFN is produced by T cells stimulated by specific antigens or T cell mitogens. All IFNs must be secreted by the producing cell and bind from the outside to specific cell receptor.
