Abstract
In the course of studying oscillating heterogeneous catalytic reactions, the oxidation of methanol was found to exhibit various types of dynamical behavior. Experiments with palladium on amorphous carrier materials (Al2O3/SiO2) as catalyst showed oscillations of the reaction temperature with a period-doubling sequence or bistable reaction regimes. The observations were explained by a phase-transition of the catalytically active palladium particles [1–3].
