Abstract
Within the framework of the ‘TEKIN’ project (GMD institute F2), we have implemented the transport entitity according to the specifications in DIN ISO 7498, in DIN ISO 8072, in DIN ISO 8073, and in the CCITT recommendation T.70. This has been done in the UNIX operating system.
In the standard the transport service is described only with respect to transport service users in different computer systems. The transport service in our implementation additionally supports communication between transport service users in the same computer system.
In the following we wish to demonstrate some of the problems, which arise by mapping an abstract communication model into a concrete operating system environment.
For this purpose we describe the constituent elements of the standard (layers, entities, service interfaces, service access points, addressing, connection endpoints, and the sequence of service primitives). We then list the elements of the UNIX system, which were available for our implementation. Subsequently we describe the technical details of our implementation and show the relationship between the elements of the standard and those utilized in our implementation.
Finally we present some performance parameters of the transport entitity which we have implemented.
