Part of the book series: International Boehringer Mannheim Symposia ((BOEHRINGER))

Abstract

The phenomenon of tolerance to nitrates has been known for a long time; the first report on the subject dates back to 1888 [35, 1]. Blasini and coworkers, a few years ago, initiated controversial discussion about the clinical importance of nitrate tolerance [1–3, 7, 13, 22, 27, 31]. Several studies, using different nitrate formulations and different dosages and investigating different parameters have yielded controversial results [5–9, 11, 13–21, 24–27, 30–34, 38–41, 43, 44]. The present study questions whether tolerance depends on dosage and formulation and which parameters best prove clinically relevant tolerance to nitrates.
