Prevention and Treatment of Peritonitis in Children on CAPD

  • Chapter
CAPD in Children

Abstract

Peritonitis remains one of the major complications of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). The magnitude of the problem is illustrated in Fig. 1, which summarizes our results obtained during the last 5 years in 11 pediatric patients (129 treatment months): All patients except patient no. 5 had at least one episode of peritonitis; the average length of hospitalization for peritonitis was 2 days per treatment month. Outpatient treatment of peritonitis was started only in 1984. No patient died, but CAPD had to be abandonded and hemodialysis initiated in patients no. 2 and 3.
