Abstract

This paper briefly reviews the autowave phenomena in heart tissue, the attention being focussed on the rotating waves of excitation (vortices). Vortices are believed to play an important part in the genesis of cardiac arrhythmias, in particular, of fibrillation, which is a major cause of sudden death from myocardial infarction.
