The study of invariant subspaces of the operators S and L has a fundamental significance for our subject. Such a study was initiated essentially already by Szegö and Wiener but the really basic contribution came with the paper by Beurling from the year 1949 which we have already referred to. Later Beurling’s methods were perfected by many authors and led to the most transparent proofs which we set forth in this Lecture.
