Abstract

The general terms “oxidants” and “photochemical air pollutants” comprise a large number of trace compounds which are formed as reaction products of certain primary pollutants, particularly NO, N02, and hydrocarbons, under the action of sunlight. Notable reaction products, which are also called secondary pollutants, are ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), higher oxides of nitrogen, aldehydes, and ketones, as well as several gaseous and/or particle-bound inorganic and organic acids.
