Human T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma Viruses (HTLV): A Unique Family of Pathogenic Retroviruses

  • Chapter
Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 115))

Abstract

In 1977, workers based in Kyoto reported a lethal lymphoproliferative Syndrome which affected migrants to that city who were born in the southwestern part of Japan (Uchiyama et al. 1977). They referred to this disease as adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), and to date several hundred patients have been described by several groups. The Syndrome is characterized by the presence of pleomorphic neoplastic cells with the membrane markers of mature T lymphocytes. Several other findings are common at presentation, including lymphadenopathy, hepato- megaly, splenomegaly, cutaneous infiltration with neoplastic T cells, hypercalce- mia (with or without lytic bone lesions), and interstitial pulmonary infiltrates. Characteristically, there is an absence of mediastinal tumor involvement.
