Abstract
In chronic medicine, a major direction of computing has been in the field of data bases, with, among other objectives, an ideal of testing hypotheses, seeking patterns. By contrast, computer applications in acute medicine have tended to concentrate on data acquisition, communication, calculation and transformation, control and display, and perhaps some diagnostics.
