Summary
Apart from the current existing suckling mice brain vaccine, a new fetal bovine kidney cell vaccine has been developed by Institut Pasteur Production, using the P.V. strain (Pasteur Virus) of fixed rabies virus, purified and inactivated by beta-propiolactone.
Three clinical trials (post exposure treatment) have been conducted at Institut Pasteur de Paris, Institut Pasteur de Tunis and Rabies Centers of Metz and Verdun with the fetal bovine cell vaccine. The kinetic of antibodies was found similar to the kinetic of currently existing cell culture vaccines.
There was no failure in all cases where exposure was proven. Several protocols have been compared in volunteers at the Centre Pasteur de Yaounde using the suckling mice brain vaccine.
-
There was no difference in the serological response between groups with or without booster.
-
The use of serum does not seem to depress the serological response.
-
A five intradermal-dose protocol appeared to be more immunizing than the classical one and can be compared with the results obtained with both FBKC and HDC vaccines.
