Abstract
With its supposedly direct effect on brain blood flow, extra-intracranial arterial bypass (EIAB) surgery represents a clinical situation where measurements of cerebral blood flow (CBF) are of particular interest. However, not least due to the well known limitations of the more conventional techniques for the measurement of CBF [5, 6], the hemodynamic effects of EIAB on brain ischemia remain a matter of controvery [2, 7, 8]. With the introduction of the dynamic single photon emission computerized tomography (D-SPECT) technique, a new method has now become available which promises to be more suitable for the clinical requirements of CBF studies and in addition provides a more accurate, namely a transaxial, image of brain blood flow (4). In the following report our preliminary experience with the D-SPECT technique in a selected group of EIAB patients is presented.
