Abstract

Treponemal infections like sexually transmitted syphilis, endemic syphilis, yaws, or pinta can be cured in all stages by specific treatment. However, these infections can also cure without any therapy, i.e., spontaneously. In the early stages of treponematoses, particularly in sexually transmitted syphilis, the demonstration of the causative agent in lesions is the diagnostic method of choice. But identification of T. pallidum is often unsuccessful because of several eventualities. In many individuals where there are clinical or epidemiological grounds for suspecting a treponemal infection, it is therefore necessary to provide the diagnosis from the humoral immune response of the infected organism.
