Abstract

The technique of gastric examination and biopsy using a fibre optic endoscope in the dog is described. This technique has been used on eight occasions to examine the stomachs of thirteen dogs as part of the investigations in a long-term toxicity study. The technique enables repeated examinations of the oesophagus and stomach to be made without any adverse effects on the stomach. The progress or resolution of lesions may be followed. The dogs have their food and bedding removed 12 hours before the procedure is due to begin. They are premedicated with acetylpromazine and atropine sulphate, and anaesthesied with intravenous sodium thiopentone. An endotracheal tube is passed and tied to the lower jaw. The endoscope is passed down the oesophagus and into the stomach. The endoscope has facilities for inflating the stomach and washing off and removing secretions by suction. Its tip can be reflected in two planes facilitating good visualisation of all areas of the stomach 2 mm biopsies of the gastric mucosa are taken using flexible biopsy forceps which are passed through a channel in the endoscope. Multiple biopsies are taken from the antrum, the greater curvature, and the lesser curvature of the stomach. They are placed on fibre-free absorbant card with mucosal surfaces uppermost for fixation in formol sublimate and subsequent processing.
